Decanter - Arguably the original Vinsanto – from Greece! Truly luscious sweet wine from the island of Santorini. Bold aromas of toffee with a luxurious, liquid caramel and raisin fruit palate. Despite its richness, there is a remarkable level of acidity and vitality making for a long, moreish but above all balanced wine. Truly savoury!

Numerous prizes have been won by this wine: the Decanter World Wine Awards awarded the 2008 Silver and the International Wine & Spirit Competition awarded the 2007 vintage Silver. This is among the highest-priced wines from Santorini. The price has been stable over the past year.

Grapes: 80% Assrytiko, 10% Athrini and 10% Aidani

Founded in 1903, the Argyros Estate is located on the island of Santorini, famed for its spiraling vines and white washed churches. The grapes used for Estate Argyros Assyrtiko are harvested from the oldest parcels of the estate. Located in Episkopi, the average age of the vines is 150  years old, with some vines over 500 years old. Yields are extremely low. The ungrafted vines are basket pruned, and dry farmed. Grapes are hand-picked in August. Hand-picked grapes are spread out on the ground to sundry for 12-14 days. The raisinated grapes are then pressed, and undergo fermentation for approximately 2 months. The wine is aged in French oak barrels for 4 years, then bottle-aged for another year prior to release.

This traditional dessert wine is honey-yellow color, with flavors of dried fruits, apricot, orange zest and herbs. Delicate and lush. The 10% Aidani and 10% Athiri perfectly mellow the acidity of the predominant Assyrtiko.
Food Pairing: An ideal pairing wine for foie gras, fruit-based desserts and creamy desserts like crème brûlée and cheesecake.
