Critical Acclaim

Wine Spectator 94 - A bright, lacy Champagne, offering a tapestry of finely woven flavors: graphite and ground spice, crushed blackberry and dried apricot, toast and honeycomb. Firm and focused, with a lasting, chalky finish.

John Gilman 93 - The newly released 2007 Bollinger “La Grande Année” is composed of a blend of Pinot Noir (almost entirely from Aÿ and Verzenay) and thirty percent Chardonnay (Cramant and Oger), with all of the vins clairs barrel-fermented. The wine was aged more than eight years sur latte and finished with a dosage of seven grams per liter. The bouquet wafts from the glass in a fine blend of peach, gentle hazelnut tones, warm bread, dried flowers, a marvelous base of soil and a smoky top-note. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, ripe and complex, with a fine core, lovely focus and grip, elegant mousse and a long, impeccably balanced finish. This is really drinking well out of the blocks, but has the structure to also age very nicely. Fine juice. Drink from 2017-2040.

Vinous 93 - Bollinger's 2007 Brut La Grande Année is quite pretty. Elegant, restrained and understated in style, the 2007 is one of the more delicate young Grande Années I can remember tasting. Mid-weight structure and silky texture only reinforce that impression. Lemon oil, red berry, dried flowers and chamomile open up nicely, but it is the wine's overall feel that stands out most. Best of all, the 2007 will drink well with no cellaring. Disgorged: September 2016.

Green almond on the nose, with vivid citrus and hints of rounder stonefruit fruit through the palate, this Grande Année feels significantly sharper than the 2005 – thanks to a cooler 2007 vintage – but keeps the honeyed, vinous character Bollinger does so well. This is a substantial Champagne with a structured backbone of acidity, while the delicate mousse keeps it lively and elegant. Fresh-drinking for now but with real aging potential, this bright release was a hit at the last customer tasting, and is a worthy addition to any cellar.
