Our Wines, Our Vision.

Our wines are not simply tasty, but they represent, to the best of our ability, the essence of the regions that we produce them in. In Napa, we aim to create wines of balance, elegance and texture that clearly represent the warm sunshine and cool breezes of the valley. In Oregon, we produce Pinot Noir that respects the damp, cool climate of the Willamette Valley, creating aromas of dark cherries, hazelnut and mushroom. In Washington, our white wines are bright, with fresh and lively acidity, while our adventurous Missouri wines are classic to the original American Viticultural Area. State of Mind Wines produces small production, single-vineyard wines from Oregon, Napa Valley and Columbia Valley. Our goal is to create wines that speak from the region, have vibrancy and life, and that tell a story of place. We choose to collaborate with vineyard owners that share our thoughts, feelings and practices - creating together something special & authentic.

Oregon's Willamette Valley is home to arguably the best terroir for Pinot Noir in the United States. It's cool climate, jory and loam soils and high latitude come together to create world class wines. In Oregon, we produce Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, from a gorgeous cool climate site, the LS Vineyard in Eola-Amity Hills.

Our single-vineyard Riesling comes from the Zillah Ranch Vineyard in the Columbia Valley in Washington State. The style is bright and fresh - meant to be serious when needed, but refreshing and casual as well. It is made in an off-dry style, with 1.8 grams of sugar per Liter, just a kiss of sweet to round off the sharp edges.

It would be hard to create an American winemaking project without including California's Napa Valley. Napa is iconic for its name, but also for the quality of wines coming from this valley. Our wines from Napa are an “ode” to the old school wines of the valley, the BV Georges de Latour & Mayacamas wines from the 60’s and 70’s. Our facility is located in the heart of the Coombsville AVA, and we produce from some excellent and storied single vineyard sites throughout Rutherford, Oakville and Coombsville.

...Meet Michael and the State of Mind team!

Michael Kennedy

Michael Kennedy is an award-winning sommelier and vintner. He got his start in the wine industry at an early age, working for our estate winery when he was just 21, then moved on to become the sommelier for Ritz-Carlton Hotels in Washington DC, before moving on to the Cayman Islands to assume the role of Head Sommelier, along with directing the wine program for famed chef Eric Ripert. After this, Michael and his wife Rachel moved back to the US to start their winery in Napa Valley, Component Wine Company, a boutique negociant, producing 100% varietal wines, and later expanded to Bordeaux, France. Since founding the winery, he has been named Forbes 30 Under 30 and his winery has been featured in Forbes, Bloomberg, Business Insider, Food & Wine Magazine and Barron’s.

Andy, Kirk & Rick

Our company is led by the incredible executive committee made up of three guys with a shared passion for entrepreneurship, wine and good times: Andy Kohn, Kirk Young and Rick Toman. Andy (left) has founded multiple companies across different design and production fields, including most recently a family of winery restaurants. He and his wife Dee Dee are also quite avid wine collectors, having collected and visited some of the best estates in Burgundy, Bordeaux, Champagne and Napa. Rick (right), also an entrepreneur, has a background in industrial production, bringing an expert set of skills to our production, management and strategic business planning. Kirk (center) is an accomplished executive in the pet-food industry, having built, developed and sold some of the most successful brands in the world. Together, they have lead and stewarded our brand and company to incredible heights.

Charles Miller, CS

Charles is our Wine Manager on-site, leading the tasting room team, along with training staff and ensuring our products are represented to the highest of standards. Charles is Kennedy's right-hand man for wine production as well, having passed his Certified Sommelier Certification through the Court of Master Sommeliers. He is also an accomplished concert trumpet player, having studied and played with some of the best in the music industry.

Alejandra Fallows, CS

While attending the university of Texas, Alejandra (Ali) worked in fine dining restaurants and fell in love with the industry and wine. This led to her later obtaining her Certified Sommelier Certificate through the Court of Master Sommeliers. Her goal as a Sommelier is to help make wine more approachable, and her love for wine stems from the fact that end of the day it brings people together. Ali manages the tasting bar at the winery, assists with staff training and is a rising star in the company!



Component Wine Company creates single-varietal, single-vineyard wines from Napa Valley & Bordeaux France. Our goal is to provide an intimate & elevated experience in which you learn about the intrinsic characteristics of each grape and each region. How can you discuss the influence of Petit Verdot in a great blend without knowing it intimately first? We hope to aid in that pursuit, while producing some delicious wines along the way.


MAKING WINE IN Napa and Bordeaux

We produce what we believe to be the most honest expression of single varietals from the finest vineyards in Napa Valley and Bordeaux. In Napa, for example, our 100% Sémillon is grown from the oldest organic Sémillon vines in the valley, planted in the heart of Yountville in 1987. We then vinify the wine in concrete egg and neutral French oak, to preserve the freshness and bright character of Semillon. This combination allows this low alcohol wine to express it’s natural texture, structure and vibrancy.

In Bordeaux, our Cabernet Franc comes from a small family vineyard named “La Carrière” on the top of the St. Emilion plateau bordering Château Pavie and Château Troplong Mondot, with clay so thick that you need a shovel to dig more than a couple inches deep. Scattered in the soil are chunks of limestone, which is no surprise for this site due to the ancient limestone quarry less that a hundred yards away. And to top it off, the wines from Bordeaux are made by the renown winemaking team from Château Lynch-Bages in Pauillac.

Our vineyard sources are as solid as any, but our desire is simple: to give you an intimate experience with varietal and place. 


Component was founded by Michael Kennedy, who throughout his years in the wine industry as a sommelier and vintner has always dreamed of creating his own intimate wine experience through a bottle of wine. Michael has been blessed to have worked with incredible chefs, especially Chef Eric Ripert while he was Head Sommelier for Blue by Eric Ripert and the Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman, inspiring sommeliers like Aldo Sohm and Rajat Parr, with seemingly limitless knowledge, and the most storied winemakers in the world that have taught, mentored and challenged him every step along the way. In 2017, he was honored with Forbes Magazine’s 30 under 30 award for his creation of Component, which has helped propel the brand into hands of curious wine collectors around the world. He splits his time between Napa, Bordeaux and Saint Louis, and spends as much time as he can with his beautiful wife Rachel and their new baby boy, Hill.
