Kerpen Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese 2014

( 0 Reviews )

Spicy, slightly honeyed nose, a little bit of cayenne. Very lively, good body. Not nearly as fierce as the Kabinett, but somewhat more rounded. Quite dry but here, the acid is met by the fruit. Not quite as mineral saturated as the Kabinett, but should win friends with the complex of flavors it has. The low alcohol gives it lift and the spiciness is very seductive. Easily the most impressive of the dry Rieslings.

Vinous 89 - The nose signals the presence of botrytis with scents of quince preserves and brown spices, along with which come site-typical apple and vanilla as well as hints of mothball and wet stone. Decadent ripeness and a botrytis overlay deprive the rich palate and sustained finish of the clarity and refreshment found in the best Kerpen bottlings of this vintage, but this is still a lovely choice, measured in sweetness, for relatively early enjoyment.
