Marietta Cellars "Roman" Zinfandel 2020
Wine Enthusiast 91 - Floral cedary aromas and big berry-soaked flavors come together on a smooth but appropriately tannic texture as this full-bodied wine drenches the palate with blackberry and boysenberry richness. It combines power with complexity and has the grippy texture needed to carry all that ripeness. It was blended with 11% Petite Sirah and 5% Barbera.
Wine Advocate 90 - A blend of 84% Zinfandel, 11% Petite Sirah and 5% Barbera, aged for 12 months in neutral barrels, the 2015 Zinfandel Roman sports a deep garnet-purple color and nose of black plums, blackberries and licorice with touches of tar, charcoal, salami and Indian spices. Full-bodied with firm, slightly rustic tannins, it offers great fruit expression in the mouth with freshness and purity coming through on the long finish.
Vinous 90 - The 2015 Román is a gorgeous, Zinfandel-based red. Bright, plump and exuberant, the 2015 offers striking depth as well as freshness. This is an incredibly delicious, inviting wine. Even better, it is a tremendous value. Petite Syrah and Barbera round out the blend. Succulent red berry, spice, leather and floral notes add to the wine's silky personality. I was quite frankly blown away by the wines I tasted at Marietta this year. Brothers Scot and Jake Bilbro have decided to each concentrate on separate properties. In practical terms that means Scot is now running Marietta on his own, while Jake operates Limerick Lane. One of the recent developments at Marietta is that most of the wines are now vintage-dated, with the exception of the Old Vine, Marietta's flagship, which will remain a non-vintage blend, as it always has been. Aside from being absolutely delicious, these wines offer superb value to the consumer, something that is getting harder and harder to find. I can't recommend these wines highly enough. 84% Zinfandel, 11% Petite Sirah, 5% Barbera
Marietta Cellars' winemaking is based on a unique blend of tradition and innovation, however, the backbone to everything that the winemakers do is hard work. Roman Cisneros, the winery's Cellar Master and employee of thirty years, embodies the heart and commitment that creates Marietta's wines. This Zinfandel is from the winery's vineyards in Alexander Valley, McDowell Valley and the Yorkville Highlands. Made in Roman's favorite style, it is rich and lush with supple but significant structure.
