Monastrell, AKA Mourvèdre, is the big bullying bruiser used to make Bandol and add weight to Aussie GSMs. But he has been misunderstood, treat him gently and he can produce dark delicacies like this.

Oveja Negra: the Spanish black sheep. When husband and wife Andres Carrull and Marta Ribera said that they’d had enough of the big reds that their Alicante ancestors are so famous for and they wanted to make a lighter style, their friends and family told them this was tantamount to blasphemy. Hence El Scandalo was born. Grapes are gently fermented, a proportion using the carbonic maceration technique made famous by Beaujolais, and aged for a tiny two months in French oak. Big on flavour but scandalously light and easy to drink.

Blackberries, raspberries, balsamic, liquorice, dark chocolate, smoke and spices. High varietal expression, elegant finish with certain level of freshness.

Food pairing Beef · Pasta · Lamb · Game (deer, venison)
